Newborn photography has always been something I enjoyed. After all, the reason I began taking pictures in the first place was because I had just given birth to my first son. I wanted to be able to capture everything, so I picked up my first camera. My style has changed drastically since those first shots. I have been desperately trying to find my style of newborn photography. I love the little props that other photographers use, but honestly, they stress me out. I love the simplicity of a baby. I feel like for me, the props become the focus, and the little one fades. In all actuality, the focus should be the tiny human (for my Grey’s fans out there). I found a breakout session on Clickin Moms by Bethany Backhus a few weeks ago. Finally I have found someone else that thinks the same way I do. The baby should be the focus! She only uses black and white backdrops and swaddles. If you check out her images, you will see babies; lots of beautiful babies, without all of the superfluous props.
After completing the online breakout session, I had the courage to step out and back away from the newborn props. I reached out to my Facebook friends to find some newborn models to put this concept to the test. Guess what? I love the images I have produced. I am absolutely re-energized to continue newborn photography!
My goal in photography is to take simple moments and make them beautiful. What do you think? Did I nail it? Leave your comments below, and don’t forget to like Simple Snaps by April on Facebook!
Are you expecting? I am currently booking maternity and newborn sessions. My studio is ready to go with loads of white and black backdrops to make your tiny human the focus!
